Allison Blakeney is a dancer, performing artist, teacher, writer, and lifetime student. A Colorado native, she has been dancing professionally for 10 years in Colorado, Los Angeles, and New York City. Her engagement with dance—as a teacher, performer, and choreographer—has grown to become interdisciplinary, drawing on her experience with art, activism, and academia; it is grounded in an understanding that the body and mind are not two separate entities, but deeply intertwined and connective experiences.
Her current work explores personal, social and, political hauntings and the ghosts that visit us through these hauntings. She is interested in the ways we are and are not complicit in powerfully abusive social systems and what dance’s role might be in all of this.
As a teacher, Allison is interested in engaging with dance through emotionally embodied movement. The goals of this are to help gain access to the vast information our body/minds offer, the ways external social systems have formed our very flesh, and what we are capable of in our fleshy dances. Classes question what has formed our body/minds so far and asks if we can, or even if we want to, re-corporealize our flesh in such a way that we can tangibly engage with these social systems through dance. In class, we learn from each other in an environment of mutual respect; we create something together, carefully attuning ourselves to one another and to the momentary space and time we find ourselves in.
Allison received her bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder and is finishing her master’s degree in Dance and Sex and Gender at New York University. She is eager to be back in Colorado working with The Schiff Dance Collective.

Throughout her college education Sofia danced and choreographed in The Schiff Dance Collective Advanced Training Company. She is now a member of The Schiff Dance Collective Professional Company.
